Sports Cars From Alpha

by William

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Italy

Alfa Romeo, founded in 1910, is famous for both road cars and sports and racing cars. Her cars won almost every race they entered. Take, for example, the Mille Miglia, a 1,000 mile race on the roads of Italy: Oldsmobile won the first race in 1927, but then until 1947 Alfa Romeos almost always won. The exceptions were the races of 1931 and 1940, which were won by Mercedes and BMW, respectively. But even so, eight or nine Alfa Romeos were invariably in the top ten, and victories were not limited to Italian races. In addition to sports cars, faster racing models of the Grand Prix class were produced. Drivers Farina and Fangio won the 1950 and 1951 world championships in cars designed before the war. The company preferred racing models that had to be produced after the war, retained the sporty lines so appreciated by fans of fast driving. Without exception, all Alfa Romeo cars were suitable for participation in rallies or club races. The four-door Alfa Romeo 1900 and Giulia Super are still leaving the so-called “real” sports cars behind. In 1947, the company returned to the production of heavy-weight grand tourers 6C 2500, but this turned out to be unprofitable: only 1,451 cars were sold in five years.

The situation changed for the better when the plant launched the production of the Alfa-1900 model with a monocoque body.

The 1900 was originally a four-door, but in 1954 a two-door coupe was introduced, beginning a line of superlative sports cars. The 1900 was followed by the Juliet and Giulia cars with 1300 and 1600 cc engines. Bodybuilders such as Zagato and Bertone turned these models into fast competitive Giulieta-SZ and Giulia-TZ machines. Zagato produced both models in small numbers. There were other cars, such as the Disco Volante, which looked like a flying saucer. The 33 series cars successfully overtook Ferrari in popularity and held the lead from 1967 to 1977.
